Queensland Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander HIV/AIDS Project (QATSIHAP)

To be effective in providing a service for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander gay men and sistergirls the project also targets the general Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities. Currently this project conducts:

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Community forums about HIV/AIDS, sexual health, IDU, discrimination and sexuality issues to increase knowledge and understanding

Peer education workshops, information forums and retreats for gay men and sistergirls about HIV/AIDS and sexual health issues
Resource production activities

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander service provider forums about HIV, sexuality and discrimination issues to improve access to services by gay men and sistergirls

Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander Sexual Health

This project aims to improve the sexual health of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander gay men and sistergirls through a culturally appropriate approach to education, prevention and community development activities.

Due to the complex needs of individuals and community groups, this process involves families, friends and carers of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander People living with HIV/AIDS, including gay men and sistergirls, to explore improved ways of coping with sexual health issues.

What can QAHC do for me?

QAHC provides the following services for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander individuals:
• printed resources and campaigns – in communities, services, via mail order or on www.qahc.org.au
• peer education workshops, information forums and retreats for gay men and sistergirls
• social support groups in Cairns (Yupla Mipla Ahfla) and Brisbane (gar ban djee lum) for gay men and sistergirls
• information, practical support and referrals for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people living with HIV
• outreach to community events and services
• limited supplies of condoms and lubricant

What can QAHC do for the community?

QAHC works at the community or population level to:
• hold community forums about HIV/AIDS, sexual health, injecting drug use, discrimination and sexuality issues to increase knowledge and understanding within ATSI communities
• hold service provider forums about HIV, sexuality and discrimination issues to improve access to services by gay men and sistergirls
• advocate the needs of behalf of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander gay men, sistergirls and people living with HIV/AIDS

What areas of the state do you cover?

Our headquarters are in Brisbane, with 2 health promotion workers covering south east Queensland and 2 workers in our Cairns office covering far north Queensland. Workers also provide limited ‘remote’ services to other parts of the state.
