Comic Book 2

The 2 Spirits Program is proud to announce the Condoman Comic Book 2 is now available. The comic, a second in the series, is a collaboration between the 2 Spirits Program (part of Healthy Communities), Queensland Health, and QAIHC (Queensland Aboriginal and Islander Health Council).

This comic book is the first time we see a range of new characters- in particular Lubelicious, who helps Condoman to fight a range of Sexually Transmitted Infections (STI's) in Indigenous communities across Queensland. Lubelicious represents the image of a strong Indigenous woman who promotes the use of water based lubricant. Together with Condoman, they fight STI's and challenge the shame of talking about sexual health.

Also this is the first time we see a number of new characters representing STI's including:

HIV, Syphillis, Gonorrhoea, Chlamydia, HPV, Hepatitis B and C, Herpes.

Stigmalien - the leader of the STI's represents the stigma attached to living with STI's or being tested for STI's.

To support the Comic Book 2, a range of suits have been developed to bring to life the characters. Many people would have seen Condoman at a range of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander events across Queensland. Now suits for Lubelicious, and the STI characters are avaialble, which will extend the reach of the characters beyond the Comic Book.

Condoman, one of Australia’s most iconic health messages in promoting the use of condoms, returns in a new and exciting design format in 2009. Condoman was originally conceived and developed in 1987 by a group of Indigenous Health Workers in Townsville. Although Condoman was specifically meant for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities his popularity over the years crossed over to the wider Australian population; and eventually to other countiesin the South Pacific region.

The 2 Spirits Project with Queensland Association for Healthy Communities (QAHC) in partnership with the Queensland Aboriginal and Islander Health Council (QAIHC) have reinvigorated the character. It aims to introduce Condoman to a generation of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders who are not familiar with the original campaign, and have not lived through the early years of HIV & AIDS in Australia, especially before the introduction of better treatments.

Condoman has been an important foundation and ongoing condom social marketing tool throughout Australia and overseas. As a testament to the original campaign the catch phrase of ‘Don’t Be Shame Be Game’ in relation to condom use is still used within particular Indigenous communities in Australia. The 2009 Condoman campaign involves a poster and a 24 page comic book.
