Homophobia/Discrimination
Discrimination and vilification on the basis of sexuality or gender identity can be against the law. If you, or someone you know has experienced homophobia, there are support networks available to you. You are always welcome to drop into a QAHC office near you, or speak with one of our team by calling your local office.

Anti-Discrimination Commission Queensland – Know your rights. You have the right to be treated fairly when you are: applying for a job or working; renting a house or flat; enrolling or going to school, TAFE or uni; using goods and services. You can make a complaint to ADCQ by calling 1300 130 670 or visit the website www.adcq.qld.gov.au. Offices in Brisbane, Rockhampton, Townsville and Cairns.
LGBTI Police Liaison Officers - The Queensland Police Service is committed to ensuring policing services are accessible to all members of the community. If you have experience violence or homophobia, visit the website http://www.police.qld.gov.au/programs/community/lgbti/lias_off.htm to find a friendly police liaison officer near you.
Rainbow Counselling Service – Conducted in partnership between QAHC and Relationships Australia, to address issues faced by LGBT people. Call 1300 364 277 and quote ‘The Rainbow Service’ to book a session. Fees are very reasonable and reductions can be arranged if you are in financial stress.
Victims Counselling and Support Services – Also conducted by Relationships Australia and providing a range of services to people who have been affected by crime either directly or indirectly. Call 1300 139 703 24 hours a day for information, referral and counselling appointments.![]()
Gay & Lesbian Welfare Association Inc – A free telephone counselling service to gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender people and their families/friends in Queensland. Call 1800 184 527 or email mailbox@glwa.org.au. ![]()
Lifeline – Telephone counselling service for relationship and family issues, mental health concerns, coping with loss, change and traumatic experiences, dealing with violence and abuse or addictive behaviours, disability and illness, suicide prevention and support. Call 13 1114.
PFLAG – Parents & Friends of Lesbians And Gays understands all families have different values, morals and beliefs regardless of their culture, race or religion. PFLAG helps families understand their lesbian daughters and gay sons. PFLAG wants families to stay together and accept each other’s differences.
